On Friday 17th of October, Mirri Mirri joined Lendlease at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) in Redfern to celebrate 30 years of the National Aboriginal Sports Corporation Australia (NASCA). In 1995 David Liddiard founded NASCA, which supports Indigenous students during difficult times, including cultural loss, racism, bullying and intergenerational trauma. From very humble beginnings, NASCA now supports more than 2,000 students across 21 YWA sites, 5 co-ed schools, and 9 Northern Territory communities.
The fun day involved Mirri Mirri and Lendlease competing in traditional games against students and supporters of NASCA. It was a great way to learn about culture and create new friendships. The games were accompanied by various stalls, Zooper Doopers and sausage sandwiches to help keep our energy up!
Janine’s netball skills really came to the fore as she steered the team around. Kai used his length and reach to significant advantage. Dean got caught up trash talking the students from Alexandria Park Community School (he was on the receiving end), whilst Paul, Jade, Kara and Bryanna offered strategic advice from the sidelines … and Lendlease spent their time regretting inviting such a rag tag bunch of people onto their team.
It was a great experience, we had lots of fun! Thanks NASCA, Lendlease and the NCIE for this great day. And no, unfortunately we did not win.
