On Monday, January 13th, the Mirri Mirri team was warmly welcomed to UNSW by Nura Gili, where we had the opportunity to engage with students in grades 9-12 about the significance and vibrancy of Indigenous culture. As this was my first camp where I would be facilitating, just like my incredible teammates, I was filled with a mix of excitement and nerves.
However, as soon as I stood up to speak, those nerves quickly transformed into exhilaration, fuelled by the positive and engaged responses from the students. The initial jitters melted away as I realised how eager they were to learn, and the experience became deeply fulfilling in a way I hadn’t anticipated.
The camp turned out to be not just a transformative experience for the students, but also for me personally. It was a unique opportunity to connect with the next generation in a meaningful way, deepening my understanding and appreciation for the importance of sharing Indigenous stories and perspectives.
