Mirri Mirri had a wonderful NAIDOC Week, celebrating with the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC). In a nice change from their normal day to day activities, LECC employees put aside conversations about policies and procedures and instead, immersed themselves into a world of Aboriginal art and weaving.

Bob, Dean, Janine and Kara guided them through symbolism and meaning, particularly the strong affinity Aboriginal people have with ‘the circle’. Circles are often prominent in many First Nations artworks and dances as a representation of family, sacred sites and meeting places. The participants sat in a yarning circle discovering interesting things about each other that perhaps they didn’t know before, especially their creativity talent.

Janine gathered the group for a final reflection. “Today's session was about more than creating artwork or a bracelet. It was about understanding the power of the circle and its significance.”

As the members of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission left the workshop, they carried with them not only their bracelets and colourful canvases but also a newfound appreciation for the richness of Aboriginal culture.
