Hi everyone! I'm Amarley, but most people know me as Marley. I’m a proud Biripi and Worimi woman from Taree, NSW.
I joined Mirri Mirri this year and have loved every moment of learning more about my culture alongside such a great team. We laugh, we play and we help connect people to our Aboriginal culture. Outside of Mirri Mirri, I'm in my second year of a Bachelor of Science (Health) at the University of Sydney, studying a mix of science, health, and Indigenous studies subjects. Like many, I am the first in my family to attend uni and it has been a great experience, enabling me to learn whilst also meeting some inspiring young people.
My trip up North
I'm still buzzing…if you’re wondering why, it's because I recently travelled to East Arnhem Land, on Yolŋu Country, for the Garma Festival. Being welcomed onto Country, surrounded by such deep cultural knowledge and generosity, was humbling. Learning alongside Elders, community members, and First Nations leaders was an experience I'll treasure.
The highlight of the trip was watching Barker Boy dance into the youth forum (check out the video below) and surprise the kids with a spontaneous dance circle. He was amazing.
If you don't know much about Garma, I recommend you look into it and try to get up there next year. It will absolutely change your life.
